Series of Santa Rosa trash can fires called 'suspicious'

Santa Rosa police and fire officials were investigating 10 garbage can and dumpster fires over the weekend in the Santa Rosa area.

No serious damage or injury was reported in connection with the blazes, Police Sgt. Josh Ludtke said.

The first incident was a dumpster fire in the 700 block of Stony Point Road at 11:35 p.m. Friday.

Between 6:42 p.m. and 9:20 p.m. Saturday there were dumpster fires in the 1700 block of West Third Street, the 1800 block of Mendocino Avenue, at Dexter and Mendocino avenues and at Sixth and Davis streets, and a garbage can fire in the Sixth Street area, according to emergency dispatchers.

On Sunday morning, a fire was reported on the railroad tracks at West Steele Lane at 5:50 a.m. followed by two garbage cans on fire at 7:08 a.m in the 1800 block of Dorado Court. On Sunday, there was a dumpster fire in the 2000 block of Sebastopol Road at 5:48 p.m. and a garbage can fire in the 1500 block of Hampton Way at 6:45 p.m.

Santa Rosa Fire Battalion Chief Bill Shubin said an investigator was working on the fires. It was too soon to label them related, but Shubin said the sequence was "suspicious."
