Attempted burglary reported at Petaluma home

The sound of someone opening kitchen cabinets awoke a Petaluma resident Monday night, causing the resident to report an attempted burglary.

Once wakened, the resident, who was sleeping upstairs in a home on Banff Way, heard someone walking up the stairs and saw a light that appeared to come from a cellphone, police said in a news release.

The resident got up to confront the suspected intruder, but at that point the person ran back down the stairs and out of the home, police said.

The resident never saw the intruder. Nothing appeared to be taken from the home, but a screen had been removed from a downstairs window and the window forced open.
