Body pulled from Petaluma River

Authorities pulled the body of a man from the Petaluma River over the weekend, Petaluma police officials said Monday.

Police found no obvious signs of foul play and an autopsy was scheduled to take place Tuesday to determine how the man died, Sgt. Ed Crosby said. Police established the man’s identity but are waiting for the findings of the autopsy to confirm it and then they will notify family, he said.

A caller reported seeing the body at about 11:40 p.m. Saturday in the water north of Payran Street. Police guarded the body from the shore until morning, prevented from retrieving the body sooner because of darkness, steep embankments, thick mud and tidal effects, Crosby said.

Firefighters pulled the body from the water early Sunday.

The body appeared to have been in the water for some time, Crosby said.
