Man suspected in Mendocino County deputy's killing had rap sheet (w/video)

At that point, they found that the vehicle was not insured. A search of the vehicle yielded a modified AR-15 rifle and body armor, police said.

They arrested him, but Lane County Jail records show that he was released from jail later in the day.

Eugene Police Department spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin said the department could not release additional information about Chaney's criminal background.

Chaney was believed to be involved the carjacking early Wednesday morning in Eugene, McLaughlin said. The carjacker forced two occupants of a black BMW into the trunk at gunpoint before heading south toward Mendocino County in the car.

What happened to the occupants was unclear Thursday morning, though Eugene police said they believed they were safe.
