Gunfire hits car in west Santa Rosa

Gunfire stuck a car in west Santa Rosa around 10 p.m. Saturday following a confrontation involving suspected gang members, Santa Rosa police said.

Police, who were still seeking suspects in the shooting, said a man who was sitting in his car on Fresno Avenue was shot at, with several bullets striking his vehicle.

"There was a confrontation in the street, and he got back into his car," said Santa Rosa Police Sgt. John Cregan. "We believe that's when the shooting began."

The man, who may have injured himself diving out of his car to escape the gunfire, initially believed he had been shot, Cregan said.

He got back in his car and fled the scene, seeking treatment at the Santa Rosa Fire Department station on Corporate Center Parkway, Cregan said.

At about 10:30 p.m., the man's car, an older-model four-door blue Plymouth Sundance, sat in the fire station's parking lot. There were several bullet holes, two on the lower half of the driver's side door. Both tires on that side of the car were flat, but Cregan said they may have been flattened by something the man drove over.

Cregan said he believed there were two suspects, but it was unclear whether they were on foot or in another vehicle when shots were fired.

The police department's gang crimes team will be handling the investigation, Cregan said.
