Candlelight vigil planned for slain Mendocino County deputy

A candlelight vigil for slain Mendocino County Sheriff's Deputy Ricky Del Fiorentino will be held Tuesday, March 25, at 8 p.m. in front of the Fort Bragg Justice Center.

Del Fiorentino, a veteran deputy, was killed March 19 in a barrage of gunfire by Ricardo Antonio Chaney, 32, a suspect in a violent crime spree that began hours before in Eugene, Ore., and ended 3 miles north of Fort Bragg.

The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office said the vigil is open to anyone who wants to pay their respects to Del Fiorentino. The Fort Bragg Justice Center is located at 700 South Franklin Street.

Information about the vigil can be found on the Facebook page "Candle Light Vigil in Honor of Ricky Del Fiorentino."

Del Fiorentino, a 26-year law enforcement veteran who served the Mendocino County coastal communities, was gunned down on a narrow residential road in Cleone. Chaney, the gunman, is also suspected of killing Eugene resident George Bundy Wasson, 79, and setting his home on fire before carjacking a BMW and heading to California.

Following his deadly encounter with Del Fiorentino, Chaney was killed a shootout with Fort Bragg Police Lt. John Naulty. The police lieutenant was the first to respond to the scene after hearing the gunfire that killed Del Fiorentino.

The candlelight vigil takes place the day before a scheduled memorial service for Del Fiorentino on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Cotton Auditorium in Fort Bragg.

Anyone wishing to make donations to the Ricky Del Fiorentino Memorial Fund can do so by contacting or visiting any of the Savings Bank of Mendocino County locations or by mail to PO Box 3600 Ukiah, CA, 95482 or at 707-462-6613.
