Copia launches eatery with free lectures

The CIA at Copia is getting ready to open its downtown restaurant, featuring a restaurant and retail store, wine-tasting experiences and cooking demonstrations.

Meanwhile, a series of free fall lectures has been scheduled, kicking off at 5:30 p.m. Saturday with Chef Virgilio Martinez, owner of Central restaurant in Lima, Peru. Martinez will talk about his new cookbook, “Central,” which includes inspirations and ingredients from Peru’s three regions.

Stephanie Danler, author of the novel, “Sweetbitter,” will talk at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 13 about the best-selling novel that traces a year in the life of a young woman working in a famous New York City restaurant.

Chinese culinary experts Kei Lum Chan and Diora Fong Chan will discuss their latest book, “China: The Cookbook,” at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 while sharing insights into Chinese food and culture. Chef Ken Woytisek of the Culinary Arts at CIA Greystone will host a Q&A session.

Pastries, coffee featured at Vikingfest

Norwegian cake waffles and homemade Scandinavian baked goods are just a few of the treats awaiting guests at Vikingfest 2016, held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Norway Hall.

The Freya Lodge Sons of Norway will also celebrate Leif Erikson Day with a Taste of Norway Lunch, plus live Viking reenactments, a photo booth and genealogy assistance.

Culinary scientist Ali Bouzari will give a workshop on his book, “Ingredient,” at 5:30 p.m. Friday, at the Healdsburg Shed.

The ticket fee of $40 includes a copy of his book, which explains the science behind your favorite dishes.

‘Dearly Departed’ dinner slated

A benefit dinner, “Dining with the Dearly Departed,” will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 15, at the Saturday Afternoon Club.

The event, which benefits the Saturday Afternoon Club and the Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery, includes a sit-down, five-course dinner, a glass of Cemetery Ridge wine and the opportunity to dine with guests such as Luther Burbank, Robert Ripley and other early Santa Rosa citizens who have departed.

Brandon Guenther of Rocker Oysterfeller’s in Valley Ford will create a family-style dinner at 5 p.m. Oct. 15 at Preston Winery in the Dry Creek Valley.

The dinner will feature Preston produce, lamb, bread and olive oil paired with the winery’s estate-grown, organic and biodynamically farmed wines.

Pizza at Martin Ray

Martin Ray Winery will heat up its new, wood-fire oven at noon Saturday to create fresh pizzas as a celebration of the harvest.

There will also be games of bocce and cornhole. Pizzas are $10, and wine flights or glasses of wine are $10.

The winery is located at 2191 Laguna Road, in the heart of the Russian River Valley.
