Transit board meets on SMART extension proposal

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission held a hearing Wednesday on a proposal to spend $20 million in bridge toll money to fund an extension of the Sonoma-Marin commuter rail line to Larkspur.

The MTC proposal would transfer $20 million to the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit authority from a now-abandoned Greenbrae interchange project.

SMART, which is building the line between Santa Rosa and San Rafael, says it needs $40 million to extend the line to the Larkspur ferry terminal.

The rail authority board last month applied for a $20 million federal grant that relies on the MTC money as matching funds.

Public comment on the SMART project, which is part of a group of projects that could receive bridge toll money, ends on April 23. The MTC has so far received no public opposition to the SMART funding proposal.

The MTC board is scheduled to vote on the funding proposal May 28.
