Clearlake police searching for man's killer

A week after a 76-year-old Clearlake resident was found beaten to death and lying on his living room floor, detectives are continuing to search for his killer.

Laddell Avenue resident John Kasler, 76, was killed during what detectives suspect started as a burglary, Clearlake police Sgt. Nick Bennett said Wednesday.

It is possible the killer didn't know Kasler was home and went inside to steal things, then discovered the man was in the house, Bennett said.

There was little taken from the residence.

Kasler lived alone in his downtown area home and had been there about five years. He was last seen alive on April 12.

He was found dead on April 16 when a police detective went to the house at about 3 p.m. to talk to Kasler about an unrelated issue, Bennett said.

Detective Travis Lenz found the man's back door kicked open and then discovered the body.

An autopsy Tuesday showed the man's injuries included broken bones and that his death occurred at the hands of another.

Detectives have not identified any suspects. Bennett asked anyone with information to contact Detective Ryan Peterson at (707) 994-8251 ext. 320.
