A wanted parolee who used a stolen utility truck to ram a California State Parks patrol cruiser near Bodega Bay last summer was sentenced to 13 years in prison Wednesday.
On the afternoon of July 30, witnesses reported a suspected drunken driver at the Bodega Dunes campground, but the vehicle was gone by the time rangers arrived.
A short time later, the rangers spotted the utility truck, driven by Adam Russell Charnley, 45, of Reno, parked in the North Salmon Creek Beach parking lot. The rangers pulled into the lot behind the truck, got out of the car and approached Charnley.
But Charnley backed up at high speed and smashed his truck into front end of the rangers' Ford Crown Victoria, disabling it.
Charnley tried to flee onto nearby Highway 1, but his truck got stuck in the sand while he was trying to drive out of the parking lot. After a brief standoff, he was taken into custody.
Charnley was convicted Wednesday in Sonoma County Superior Court of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, resisting arrest by threat or use of violence, vandalism and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Judge Robert LaForge sentenced Charnley to 13 years in state prison.
