Letter of the Day: Collateral damage

Collateral damage

EDITOR: On Tuesday, I was driving down Main Street in Sebastopol around noon and passed an injury accident that had taken place about a block from Palm Drive Hospital. As I drove by, I thought about how the injured person was going to be transported to Santa Rosa, eight miles away, and hoped that the injury wasn't serious.

I turned into the usually vibrant shopping area on South Gravenstein Highway expecting to have to search for a parking space, only to find that the lot was half empty. Starbucks, usually full at that time of day, had only a couple of customers. The outdoor tables of the two restaurants, usually occupied at noon, were empty.

There, in the corner, was the once busy Palm Drive physical therapy facility, shut tight with a sign on the door announcing the closure. A feeling of sadness washed over me as I grabbed my latte and went on my way. I had just had a glimpse of collateral damage. I can only imagine how much more there is and will continue to be.
