Cal Fire curtails open fires early

Cal Fire has suspended authorization for open fires until the end of fire season.

The seasonal ban takes effect Sunday, about two weeks earlier than last year and a month sooner than in 2012.

Cal Fire officials said the dry conditions have led to a longer fire season and an increase in fires and restricting open burns, usually permitted during the wetter, winter months, is an important tool in preventing more fires from breaking out.

"The drought has played a role," said Cal Fire spokesperson Suzie Blankenship. "We had fires in January and February which is not something we see in this area. It's posed a big challenge for us."

Those wishing to conduct agriculture, land management, fire training and other industrial-type burning must apply for a permit from Cal Fire. They also must check with their regional air district to ensure compliance with air quality regulations, she said.
