Official declare Thursday 'Spare the Air' day

Yet another Winter 'Spare the Air' day has been declared for Thursday, meaning fireplaces and wood stoves around the Bay Area will be cold another day.

Burning of any wood or solid fuels is prohibited on Winter Spare the Air days under a program designed to prevent unhealthy air conditions within the nine-county Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Thursday is the 14th such day this season, mainly attributed to dry, still weather conditions of the type that hold particular matter like soot close to the Earth, presenting a problem to those with respiratory conditions.

Residents with no other heating source are exempt from the burn ban.

The Bay Area air district takes in most of Sonoma County, including Windsor, Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, Petaluma and Sebastopol. It also includes unincorporated parts of Sonoma County roughly bounded on the west by Occidental and on the north by Windsor.

The winter Spare the Air season runs from Nov. 1 to the end of February.
