A former NFL quarterback admitted in court Tuesday to violating a restraining order and writing bad checks in a plea bargain with prosecutors that got him out of jail.
Jesse Freitas, 60, a Petaluma resident who played with the San Diego Chargers in the mid-1970s, had been in custody since earlier this year.
He was evaluated for mental health issues linked to eight open criminal cases, including hit-and-run driving and petty theft. However, county officials deemed his condition was not serious enough for a permanent hospital commitment.
Under his plea arrangement, he was ordered to stay away from G&G Market, Oliver's in Cotati and a Petaluma club for Alcoholics Anonymous members and was to be released with credit for time already served.
He asked that he be supervised by an ex-wife in Yolo County. It was unclear if Judge Dana Simonds made that an official order after meeting with lawyers in closed-chambers.
The ex-wife, who appeared in court, declined to comment.
Simonds ordered Freitas, who played back-up to NFL Hall of Famer Dan Fouts, to take his medication.
"I wish you the best of luck," Simonds said.
