Council race takes shape

Six in race so far - but one of the incumbents isn't. Who is it?|

Two-term council member Mike O?Brien did not file papers for re-election by 5 p.m. today, meaning he will not run in November?s council race.

His decision means the filing period will be extended through 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13.

Council members Samantha Freitas and Karen Nau, whose terms are also up at the end of the year, will both run in November?s election.

They will be joined on the ballot by former mayor David Glass, former council member Mike Healy and previous candidates Spence Burton and Tiffany Ren?.

Council watcher Diane Reilly Torres, who announced she would run and took out papers to do so, said Friday she decided to drop out and endorse Burton.

According to election law, since an incumbent did not file, any other registered Petaluma voter has until Wednesday to turn in paperwork.

O?Brien?s decision not to run means there will be at least one new face on the council come January, although the challengers so far are familiar to Petaluma voters.

Glass ran for council in 2000 before winning the mayor?s job in 2002, serving one term.

Healy served two terms on the council before running for mayor in 2006, losing to Pamela Torliatt.

Burton ran for council in 2004 and 2006 and is currently a Petaluma planning commissioner.

Ren? ran for council in 2006 and is currently chair of the city?s Technology and telecommunications Advisory Committee. She also serves on the Development Code Advisory Committee.

Anyone interested in joining the six candidates on the ballot so far can contact the city clerk?s office at 778-4360 to learn filing requirements.
