Letter of the Day: Dysfunctional politics

Dysfunctional politics

EDITOR: A new year and the folly in Washington continues. Democrats continue to insist on entitlements we can ill afford. Republicans continue to insist we do this with spending cuts alone. We still refuse to address gross overspending and a staggering national debt. Americans continue to elect representatives who do not represent what the American people continue to ask for.

It is time to balance the budget with substantial spending cuts, modest tax increases and by closing some tax loopholes protecting the few and large corporations. It's not that complicated, but as long as we continue to blindly follow party lines and vote for incumbents who refuse to listen to their constituency, this folly will continue.

They aren't listening to us, but why should they as long as we keep re-electing them? It is time to vote for candidates who listen to the voters, and I urge you to do just that, or this cycle of dysfunction known as Washington politics will continue. It really is up to us.
