Cloverdale pedestrian struck, killed in crosswalk

A Cloverdale woman died Sunday night after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing the street in a crosswalk.

Police said that 68-year-old Maria Ponce was hit at the intersection of South Cloverdale Boulevard and Healdsburg Avenue just south of downtown Cloverdale. She was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where she died, police said.

The collision was reported at 9:34 p.m. Cloverdale Fire personnel were treating the woman when police arrived, Cloverdale Police Sgt. Keith King said.

The male driver, 83-year-old Guadalupe Castro Barragan of Cloverdale, was released at the scene, King said. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The incident is under investigation, and the Sonoma County Sheriff's office will do an autopsy to determine cause of death, King said.
