Registration for 2013 GranFondo ride begins Monday

Registration for the Levi Leipheimer King Ridge GranFondo, an annual ride that takes cyclists over some of the most challenging and scenic roads in Sonoma County, opens Monday morning.

It will be the fifth year for the ride, which last year raised $248,000 for nonprofit organizations, fire departments, schools and the city of Santa Rosa, which uses the money to help pay for the cost of hosting a stage of the Amgen Tour of California.

The ride will have slots for 7,500 riders. The 4,000 slots for the 100-mile ride are the most popular, usually selling out within a few days and drawing riders from throughout the United States and overseas.

The cost is $150 for the century ride, $130 for the 65-mile medio ride, and $75 for the 35-mile piccolo ride.

The ride will be held Oct. 5, with the start and finish line and a festival at the Finley Center in Santa Rosa.

Registration opens at 9 a.m. at www.levisgranfondo.com.
