Coast Guard rescues surfer off Dillon Beach

A Sebastopol surfer unable to get back to shore was rescued off Dillon Beach by the Coast Guard over the weekend.

The rescue took place at 2:35 p.m. Saturday in seas with swells of 3 to 5 feet, but there was a strong riptide running out from the beach, said Bob Paulino, a boatswain's mate first class.

A Dillon Beach resident called the Coast Guard to report two surfers were about 700 yards from shore and appeared to be struggling to get back in, Paulino said.

By the time the Bodega Bay Coast Guard station's 47-foot motor lifeboat arrived, one of the surfers had made it back, but the other was pulled onto the boat, Paulino said.

The surfer, who was not identified, had suffered from cramps. He did not need medical treatment, Paulino said.
