Lake Mendocino closed to motorized boats

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has closed Lake Mendocino to motorized boat travel because the lake's low level this year poses a risk to boater safety.

The corps, which manages the reservoir, issued a notice Tuesday, saying it was closing both the north and south boat launches, as well as prohibiting vehicle travel at a southern beach known as "Jet Ski Beach," effective immediately.

A very dry spring has left the area parched and storage in Lake Mendocino at only 43 percent of capacity.

Visitors with canoes, kayaks or other portable vessels may still carry them to shore and paddle out on the lake.

Lake Sonoma remains open to boats.

More information on the launch closures is available at (707) 467-4200.
