Montgomery Village sculpture damaged

A Santa Rosa shopping center statue that was part of a recent debate about what constitutes public art has been damaged, its owners said Tuesday.

The American flag that was held aloft by a life-sized bronze figure of a boy in an installation at the Montgomery Village Shopping Center was broken off sometime Monday night, developer David Codding said.

The flag was left behind along with several empty alcohol bottles, Codding said.

He said it appeared someone may have tried to climb the statue and broke off the flag.

Codding said the flag will be welded back on Wednesday. He said security cameras will be installed to record any future vandalism.

The mass-produced statue is part of an installation of three works, one of which was commissioned and aimed at satisfying a public art requirement.
