A transient woman looking for her dog was struck and killed late Tuesday by a vehicle on a Roseland neighborhood street in Santa Rosa, CHP officials said.
The 45-year-old woman was hit at 8 p.m. in a northbound lane of West Avenue near Bayer Park and Gardens and Sheppard Accelerated Elementary School, Sgt. Bob Barr said.
The pedestrian's fiance told officers they were looking for her dog, a Chihuahua named Bentley wearing a pink jacket, Officer Kimberly Lemons said.
Officers were still interviewing witnesses and the driver at the scene late Tuesday.
West Avenue is a wide two-lane street with raised sidewalks. Several street lamps were off, although lights from the school and down the street partly illuminated the area.
Several witnesses, including other dog walkers and a passing motorist, told officers the Ford Expedition appeared to have been traveling at a normal speed, Lemons said.
They told officers it didn't appear the driver had time to stop before the woman entered her path, Lemons said.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead about 20 minutes later at a hospital.
As investigators took measurements, the Expedition was stopped, emergency lights flashing, about 20 yards north of a pool of blood in the road. Several children were in the car at the time of the crash, officials said.
The names of the pedestrian and driver were not immediately available. The posted speed limit is 25 mph.
