Former Cardinal Newman football star Al Netter, who spent the past season on the 49ers practice squad, was arrested Wednesday by the San Jose CHP and charged with driving under the influence.
Netter, who lives in Rohnert Park, was cited for a having a blood alcohol count above the legal limit of .08.
The 310-pound tackle graduated from Newman in 2007 and then played four years for Northwestern of the Big Ten.
He signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent last April 28 and accompanied the team to the Super Bowl.
Calls to Netter were not immediately returned.
Through publicity director Bob Lange, the 49ers issued a statement:
"The 49ers are aware of the recent matter involving Al Netter. We take these issues very seriously, but will reserve comment at this time as this is an ongoing legal matter. The organization will continue to gather the facts and monitor the developments closely."
Lange, coach Jim Harbaugh and other team officials returned Friday night from Indianapolis, where they attended the NFL scouting combine.
Harbaugh praised Netter for his practice habits during Super Bowl week, and the team signed him on Feb. 7 to a reserve/future contract, meaning he'll probably be with the team in training camp this summer.
Netter had an opportunity to sign with other NFL teams rather than spend the past season on the 49ers' practice squad.
"Ultimately, it's my goal to play in the NFL, not be on the practice squad," Netter said during Super Bowl week. "But sometimes it's important to look at the big picture and not just the immediate future."
After signing a contract last year, Netter said it was always his dream to play for the 49ers.
