More local strike teams head to Yosemite National Park blaze

Led by Sonoma Valley Battalion Chief Bob Norrbom, the Sonoma County strike team was made up of engines from Santa Rosa, Bennett Valley, Gold Ridge, Occidental and Forestville, according to Sonoma County fire dispatch reports.

A Napa-based strike team also left Monday for the fire, led by Napa city fire Capt. Josh Pero.

That one was made up of wildland engines from Napa, Napa County, American Canyon, St. Helena and Rancho Adobe fire in Sonoma County, said Cal Fire Capt. Frank Engelbert.

As of Tuesday morning, fire officials categorized the Rim fire as 20 percent contained, indicating firefighters were beginning to make some gains on the run-away blaze.

Other information released Tuesday morning included that a new survey of the burned areas indicated the number of buildings burned had increased to 111. That was made up of 31 homes and 80 outbuildings.

Already at the fire are several other local firefighters, from Windsor, Glen Ellen, Sonoma Valley, Santa Rosa and Napa fire departments.

With 5,500 structures still threatened in a variety of communities, about 4,500 of those homes, many of the firefighters are being assigned to protect homes and property.

Santa Rosa Fire Capt. Keith Flood has been at the fire for several days, working alone as a scout, helping map the fire, said Jones.

Mendocino County Cal Fire has sent five engines and about 20 firefighters to the Yosemite fire. A couple of engines amd crews also have gone from the Lake-Napa-Sonoma Cal Fire region.
