A man was struck and killed on Montgomery Drive near Spring Lake by a driver who left the scene and still was being sought Wednesday night, authorities said.
The victim's identity was withheld pending notification of his parents, who are elderly and reside out of state, the Sonoma County Coroner's Office said.
The man was struck shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday just west of a stretch of Montgomery Drive where many people leave their cars to walk into the park and the Spring Creek Trail, police said.
There were no eyewitnesses to the crash, but people in the area heard the sound of the impact and rushed to a spot on the south side of the road where the victim lay, police said.
His death marked the 11th pedestrian fatality in Santa Rosa since January 2011. Two more people suffered life-threatening injuries but survived.
Authorities were looking for a newer-model Mercedes-Benz sedan similar to what witnesses reported seeing speeding away from Wednesday's crash.
The car was described as light in color and the driver a white or Latino man, possibly in his 30s with dark hair. The vehicle may have front-end damage.
Longtime resident Sharyn Desideri, who lives two doors down from where the man was struck, said motorists generally drive the road too fast, given that there are homes in the area and heavy foot traffic.
The speed limit "shouldn't be 40 miles an hour," she said. "We have a residential area, and it should be 25."
