Body found in Petaluma creek

Petaluma detectives found a decomposing body in Willowbrook Creek on Thursday afternoon, but had little information about the identity of the person.

A caller alerted police to the body, found near the 5400 block of Old Redwood Highway in an area of Petaluma with a network of creeks at 2:07 p.m. The body appeared to have been there for several days, officers said.

Detectives plan to review any open, local missing person cases.

"I'm not aware of any outstanding cases in which we suspect foul play," Petaluma police Sgt. Ed Crosby said. "There's nothing remarkable outstanding on our plate that can give us a sense of who this is."

An autopsy is scheduled to help identify the body and to possibly determine the cause of death.

"That can take anywhere from days to weeks, depending on what they need to do to identify the person," Crosby said. "It's in their hands now."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Petaluma Police Department at 778-4372. Those who wish to remain anonymous may call PPD Crime Tips at 781-1200 or email ppdtips@ci.petaluma.ca.us.
