State Senate approves Snoopy license plate bill

The California Senate has sent the governor a bill authorizing the DMV to issue a commemorative license plate featuring Charles Schulz's beloved Peanuts character Snoopy, a plate intended to raise money for California's 1,400 museums and science centers.

Gov. Jerry Brown has until Oct. 13 to decide whether to sign the bill, sponsored by Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins, D-San Diego. The Assembly passed the bill in May.

If the governor approves, at least 7,500 motorists would need to preorder the plate before the DMV begins to issue it, but the California Association of Museums says it has a list of at least 9,200 car owners who have expressed interest. The plates would cost $50 each, plus $48 additional for personalized lettering.
