A proposed ban on carryout plastic bags in Sonoma County has reached the final set of government steps before officials weigh its approval this spring.
A public comment period that began early last month on an environmental impact report is set to end Friday.
Officials said most of the several dozen comments they have received support the proposed ban.
It would also levy a 10-cent fee on carryout paper bags.
The ordinance is aimed to reduce litter and shift consumers to reusable bags. It would cover local cities and the unincorporated county.
The Sonoma County Waste Management Agency is set to consider approving the environmental report at its April 17 meeting. Presentations before the Board of Supervisors and city councils would precede any final vote by the agency to approve the ban. That step is tentatively timed for June.
