Ukiah man struck, killed by garbage truck on Highway 20

A 22-year-old Ukiah man was killed Friday morning when he got out of his wrecked car and was struck by an oncoming garbage truck, the CHP said.

The man's name wasn't released pending notification of his family.

The CHP said a man driving a 1995 Nissan Altima west on Highway 20 lost control of the car around 4:45 a.m. at the Potter Valley Road exit. His car came to rest in the eastbound lane facing the wrong direction with no lights on.

The man was standing in the "V" of the open driver's door trying to stop traffic, the CHP said, when a Waste Management garbage truck approached.

Driver Ron Grove, 57, of Glen Haven, couldn't see the Nissan or the driver, the CHP said, and struck the Nissan, throwing the driver down an embankment.

The wreck blocked both lanes of Highway 20 for about an hour. Grove wasn't cited.
