Constellation Brands to invest millions in wine operation

Constellation Brands, the alcoholic beverage giant that owns Mark West, Simi and dozens of other wine brands, announced plans Thursday to invest more than $20 million in its winery and vineyard operations.

The company will purchase or lease more than 750 acres in the Lodi Delta to plant pinot noir, chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon vineyards that will supply brands including Mark West.

"The need for more land, fermenters, tanks and bottling lines is a direct result of the success of our brands," said Jay Wright, president of Constellation's wine and spirits division.

The company also will expand its tanks and crushing capacity in the Central Coast. At its Turner Road Vintners winery in San Joaquin County, Constellation has also installed a Tetra Pak bottling line.

Constellation, based in Victor, N.Y., reported $3.17 billion in sales last year.
