Letter of the Day: Money corrupts

Money corrupts

EDITOR: The outrageous sums that this president and past presidents have spent on their re-elections underscore the influence that special interests hold on our elected officials. The adverse consequences of these enticements and the distractions from presidential duties while campaigning are immeasurable.

This perversion flags the need for a constitutional amendment limiting the president to a single six-year term. The framers of the confederate constitution recognized the need for this and included it in their their version.

Public campaign funding, with effective restrictions against secret and corporate funding, is also overdue. Until these measures are in place , our elected officials will continue to forestall the reforms necessary to defang the special interests and advance our vital environmental and economic reforms.
