Obama visited California for Democratic fundraisers. He had promised to headline at least 20 fundraisers in his final term for Democrat's campaign committees, and last week raised millions of dollars in a four-event fundraising blitz that included an intimate $32,400-a-head brunch in the ritzy town of Atherton, Calif. Letter of the Day: White House travel

White House travel

EDITOR: I hope that Dominic Graham ("What a trip," Letters, April 8) realizes that when the president or vice president travel, whether it be for official reasons or fundraising, there is always a lot of security, involving a lot of personnel, both federal and local, and thus inconvenience to the surrounding area.

In my travels as a commercial pilot for more 35 years, I saw and personally experienced such inconveniences three times, involving presidents and vice presidents of both parties. My favorite was returning from a morning run in San Diego and discovering that I could not re-enter our crew layover hotel because Vice President Dan Quayle and his party were a bit late for their scheduled departure. Several of us had to wait outside on the sidewalk, about a half-block from the entrance, until the party left about 30 minutes later. Street traffic was blocked for a four-block area around the hotel in downtown San Diego as well.

This is routine and happens everywhere the president and vice president travel.
