Clearlake police dog bites wanted man found hiding under bed

A Clearlake police dog Monday tracked a wanted felon who was hiding under a bed, bit him and helped get him into custody, Clearlake police said.

Officers arrested Brandon Conwell, 25, of Vallejo after getting him out from under the bed of a home on Pineview Drive in the Lake County town.

Officers had gone to the home at about noon Monday looking for the man, who they'd heard was there and could be armed. Conwell was wanted on a felony arrest warrant, said Clearlake police.

When they arrived, they saw Conwell standing outside and then run into the back yard. Officers followed him through several yards, with the chase cutting through yards and over fences.

They lost him in a backyard of one home but found an open sliding door. The resident was sitting on her front porch and allowed officers to go inside to look for the man.

One officer yelled repeatedly that "Dex" the police dog was going to come inside if he didn't give up. No one emerged and the dog went in, finding the man.

He was arrested on the warrant, on suspicion of resisting arrest and being a felon with a gun.

Conwell was treated by Lake County firefighters, taken to St. Helena Hospital for further medical aid and then to the Lake County Jail.

He remained in custody Tuesday, with bail set at $20,000.
