FOR 29 HALLOWEENS dentist Steve Berger has invited kids to sell him — for $1 a pound — whatever portion of their treat-or-treat candy they don't want to keep.

This year the exchange happens from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at the practice Berger now shares with his daughter,

Shana Van Cleave, on Santa Rosa's Hoen Avenue.

IT WAS BARLEYCORN'S for decades. And it was a sad day for many when the bar and burgery in southeast Santa Rosa went belly up in 2011.

The hallowed spot on Yulupa Avenue returns to life today as Riccardo's. There are vintage Santa Rosa photos on the wall, a custom-made Wallace & Winz bar and furnishings that beckon, sit a spell.

Owners Rick and Lori Miron spared no expense in the conversion, and they arranged with Riccardo and Julie Cattaneo of the nearly neighboring Trattoria Cattaneo to manage the place.

To celebrate the opening, the Mirons will donate all of today's receipts to Montgomery High's sports boosters and education foundation.

Friday's take will go to the Bennett Valley Fire Department, and Saturday's to animal programs.

PIZZA FOR ALAN: Also on Saturday, in that same Yulupa Avenue shopping center, Gio's Pizza will host a fund-raiser for Alan Richardson from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Alan is the young man disabled in a horrendous car-vs-motorcycle crash just blocks from the pizzeria last July. A bake sale and other attractions will raise money that he sorely needs.

Alan loves Gio's and vice versa.
