A Petaluma police officer was legally drunk when he crashed a scooter on a public golf course during a department tournament last fall, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Tests from Petaluma Valley Hospital show Officer Ryan McGreevy had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 percent, well over the legal limit of 0.08 percent, prosecutor Brian Staebell said.
McGreevy was tested during his treatment for undisclosed injuries in the Oct. 5 crash at Rooster Run Golf Club.
His medical records were released over his objection by a judge's order. Prosecutors also received statements made during McGreevy's hospital visit which support a conclusion that he was intoxicated, Staebell said.
McGreevy, who was recognized in 2007 for his enforcement efforts by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, was charged in January with driving while impaired. Prosecutors added a second count Wednesday to reflect the test results.
He has pleaded not guilty and remains on active duty, said his lawyer, Michael Li.
The crash happened during an annual tournament to raise money for the department's hostage negotiation team. Alcohol was served at the event attended by many officers and department brass.
McGreevy, who was seen drinking from a red cup, crashed a co-worker's scooter at about 2 p.m. Doctors took the blood sample at 5:55 p.m., Staebell said.
He did not receive a sobriety test at the golf course. Charges were not filed until after the CHP conducted an investigation about a month later.
Prosecutors said it is illegal to ride a scooter on a golf course while intoxicated.
