Man sought in 2000 Ukiah killing arrested in Mexico

A man on the lam for 13 years suspected of bludgeoning an acquaintance to death in Ukiah was in U.S. custody Monday in Mexico, the FBI said.

Mexican police arrested Jerred Raymond Hernandez, 32, Sunday in Ensenada, the FBI and Ukiah police said in a statement.

Hernandez, who was born in Redding, was 19 when he became the prime suspect in the slaying of Michael Edward Williamson, 44, who was house sitting for his parents, authorities said.

Hernandez is accused of killing and robbing Williamson on Aug. 2, 2000, and then setting the Carolyn Street home on fire in an apparent attempt to cover his tracks, police said. Williamson's parents have said their son was trying to help Hernandez, a troubled teen who lived around the corner.

A week after Williamson was killed, Hernandez' father told police that his son visited an uncle in Ensenada, according to a federal complaint filed Sept. 13, 2000.

Hernandez was featured in a 2012 episode of "America's Most Wanted" television show.

Hernandez was arrested Sunday on a federal fugitive warrant. Federal authorities expect to dismiss the fugitive complaint and that Hernandez will be prosecuted in Mendocino County.
