Fort Bragg foster dad faces preliminary hearing in death of baby

A Fort Bragg man suspected of killing an infant within his foster care will have a preliminary hearing in Mendocino Superior Court Thursday.

Wilson Lee Tubbs III, 38, is facing a charge of child abuse resulting in death, according to the Mendocino County District Attorney's office.

Tubbs brought a 5-month-old baby girl with bruises on her face and head to the Mendocino Coast District Hospital Dec. 2. Hospital staff then alerted Fort Bragg police to the incident, said Fort Bragg Police Chief Scott Mayberry.

Tubbs initially stated the infant had fallen off a changing table, but later admitted to police that he had slapped and shook the baby, Mayberry said. The baby died at Oakland Children's Hospital from the sustained injuries on Dec. 4.
