SANTA ROSA Man convicted of 19 DUIs arrested

Editor’s Note: Correction: Santa Rosa resident William Ryland Beall was convicted of drunken driving 15 times dating back to 1974. The total number was incorrectly reported in a March 8 article on Page B3 and in?previous stories in 2010 and 2011. Beall also was convicted of reckless driving four times. At least three of those convictions were alcohol-related. Beall served a 15-month jail sentence ending in August 1988 and was paroled from a two-year prison sentence in December 1999. Both stemmed from drunken-driving convictions. Incorrect information appeared in the previous articles.

A man convicted of 19 DUIs in the past 30 years was jailed Friday on suspicion of driving on a suspended license, police said.

Officers staked out the home of William Beall, 68, of Santa Rosa and arrested him when he drove away.

Beall has a lengthy history with law enforcement, according to Press Democrat archives. In early 2011, he was sentenced to three years in prison after this 19th drunken driving conviction. A judge was considering allowing him to serve a lesser term in an alcohol treatment facility when police found wine and hard liquor in his home, prompting the longer sentence. He's since been released on probation, Petaluma Police Sgt. Jim Stephenson said. Beall was also sent to state prison for two years in 1988. After that, he went eight years without a DUI until his 2010 arrest.
