Santa Rosa residents involved in the city's arts community are being encouraged to apply for two open seats on the Arts in Public Places Committee.
The four-year terms of two of the at-large members of the committee — Judy Kennedy and Steve Rabinowitsh — are up at the end of the year. The city is calling for others interested in being appointed to the committee to apply by Dec. 16.
The committee oversees the city's public art program, which includes a wide range of public art installations, exhibitions, and concerts. The city is in the midst of drafting a new master plan for the program, so the at-large members will have a hand in creating that road map, said Tara Matheny-Schuster, the city's arts coordinator.
"It's a very exciting time," Matheny-Schuster said.
Rabinowitsh said he is considering reapplying for the seat. Kennedy, who caused a stir earlier this year when she publicly criticized a sculpture garden at the Montgomery Village Shopping Center as "schlock," said she will reapply for appointment.
The committee current has nine members, five representing other city boards and commissions and four at-large members selected from the general public.
"It's good to get some new people interested," Matheny-Schuster said.
The only requirement for service is that a person be a resident of Santa Rosa. But the selection panel likes to see people with some experience or interest in art, such as involvement in neighborhood art projects, Matheny-Schuster said.
"We really look at the at-large positions to offer an insight into the arts community," Matheny-Schuster said.
The committee typically meets on the first Monday of each month at 3:30 p.m. at the Steele Lane Community Center, 415 Steele Lane.
