But in some places "we are breaking 1972 records," Cross said, "like down in San Rafael it got down to 30, which beats the old record of 31."
At the Homeless Services Center run by Catholic Charities, about 35 people sought refuge through the night after organizers and close to a dozen last-minute volunteers set up warming stations at the Morgan Street drop-in center, said Jennilynn Holmes, the agency's director of shelter and housing services.
"We expect about double that tonight," Holmes said.
The organization set up canopies and heaters, and donors came by with sleeping bags, jackets, gloves, warm socks and other items, more of which are still needed, Holmes said.
"We're just trying to keep people alive," she said.
Anyone with donations they would like to contribute can contact Holmes at her office, (707) 542-5426.
