Water and nature

EDITOR: Nature doesn't know what's best, but politicians do. Gov. Jerry Brown wants to spend billions of dollars transporting water from where it is natural to where it is not. This could be one costly magic act.

Edward Abbey wrote that agriculture, beyond bringing civilization to mankind, would eventually bring on our destruction. I see his point but in a different light. There is arrogance in putting more people on an earth that does not have enough fresh water for them. Imagine, building cities in deserts or telling your religious followers that it is important to procreate in order to spread your theology. Wouldn't an almighty rather us use our brains than our sex organs?

We don't have enough water for tens of millions of people in the state. A better solution to problems in arid Southern California is to find ways to limit the number of people living there. But that would anger economists, politicians and religious leaders. Mankind does have plenty of common sense. Let's use it to avoid death by thirst.
