Man convicted of attempted murder arrested in Forestville

A man wanted since 2010 after being convicted of attempted murder and kidnapping in Redding was apprehended Monday in Forestville after a several-hour standoff with Sonoma County sheriff's deputies.

Jacinto Jose Valdovino, 30, was arrested just before 3 a.m. Monday on Steve Olson Lane, Sheriff's Sgt. Mark Fuston said.

Valdovino was convicted in 2010 of forcing a rival gang member at gunpoint into his car, driving to Redding's outskirts and trying to shoot him, Redding Police Cpl. Rex Berry said. A bullet struck the man's wallet in his back pocket as he ran away, Berry said. Valdovino fled and later was arrested in Chico.

He fled again Nov. 18, 2010, while out on bail, the day before a jury issued guilty verdicts. The FBI joined the search.

A tip led Redding police to call the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office at about 4 p.m. Sunday, Fuston said.

After hours of surveillance, the sheriff's SWAT team knocked on the door of a modular home at about 9:30 p.m. No one answered. Negotiators tried to talk to Valdovino as the hours stretched on, Fuston said.

Chemical agents finally drove Valdovino out from where he had hid under the home before 3 a.m., Fuston said.

Valdovino was being held at the Sonoma County Jail without bail. He will be returned to Shasta County and sentenced, Berry said.
