A Santa Rosa man and his young daughter suffered minor injuries Wednesday when their car veered off northbound Highway 101 in Windsor at 70 mph, crashed through a fence just north of Shiloh Road, overturned and came to rest in a frontage road, the CHP reported.
The driver, Rodrigo Raul Reyes-Algodon, 23, who witnesses and officers said was visibly impaired by alcohol, was arrested, CHP Officer Terry Mu?z reported.
Quick action by witnesses prevented the 11a.m. incident from escalating, Mu?z said.
After freeing himself and his 4-year-old daughter from the 1998 Honda Civic, which was resting in the northbound lane of Hembree Lane, Reyes-Algodon attempted to flee on foot, apparently in a westerly direction that would have taken him across the highway, the CHP reported.
Several passers-by detained him and tended to his daughter until authorities arrived.
Windsor police and firefighters were the first on scene.
Both father and daughter were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment of cuts and bruises.
The daughter was released to her mother, Reyes-Algodon's estranged girlfriend, the CHP reported.
Reyes-Algodon had picked up the girl from her mother earlier in the day for a Christmas visit, CHP officer Jon Sloat said in a news release. The girl was restrained only by a seat belt and was not in a child safety seat.
Reyes-Algodon, who is unlicensed and an undocumented immigrant, according to the CHP, was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on felony DUI and hit-and-run charges. Sloat said the man's blood alcohol level was more than triple the legal limit.
