Man arrested at gunpoint in Rohnert Park after brief chase

A Fort Bragg man was arrested at gunpoint by CHP officers and Sonoma County sheriff's deputies Thursday evening in Rohnert Park after a failed attempt to evade a traffic stop, the CHP said.

A vehicle driven by Joshua Thomas Hughes, 42, was spotted on Highway 101 near Lakeville Highway around 6 p.m. after a caller reported a possible DUI driver in the area, Officer Jon Sloat said. When police gave chase, the vehicle turned off on Golf Course Drive and tried to flee on Commerce Boulevard, but was blocked by a CHP vehicle and officers ordered Hughes out at gunpoint.

The vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, turned out to have been reported stolen in San Francisco, Sloat said. A records check showed that Hughes was driving with a suspended license and had outstanding felony warrants in San Francisco on charges related to drug possession and possession of stolen property.

A search of the vehicle turned up syringes, prescription medication and paperwork and credit cards under several names, Sloat said. Hughes failed a field sobriety test at the scene.

Hughes was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, DUI, driving while suspended, possession of drug paraphernalia, and the charges on the outstanding warrant.
