West Santa Rosa grass fire blamed on power lines

A wind-whipped fire that bore down Tuesday on a west Santa Rosa neighborhood and school, charring 11 acres, was caused by power lines slapping together in the breeze, a fire investigator said Thursday.

"There were some definite arc marks on the power lines and just above the fire's area of origin," Rincon Valley Fire Protection Officer Cyndi Foreman said.

The fire started around 4 p.m. Tuesday in a grassy field south of Piner Road and west of Willowside Road, not far from Olivet Elementary School.

Several structures were threatened, but the only significant damage was to a garage and a classic car with an estimated value of $40,000 that was parked inside.
