82-year-old woman killed in crosswalk in St. Helena

An 82-year-old St. Helena woman died Thursday night after she was struck in a crosswalk on downtown's Main Street, St. Helena Police said.

Elsie "Alice" Stefani, who lived a few blocks away, was nearly across the road when a woman turning left onto northbound Main Street from Madrona Drive struck and fatally injured her around 5:50 p.m., police said.

Stefani was flown by air ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital but did not survive, authorities said. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

It was unclear why the 52-year-old driver, Calistoga resident Therene Pierrette, did not see Stefani, police Cpl. Ramon Jovel said.

Traffic on Fulton Lane, which meets Madrona at the intersection, had stopped to allow her to cross, but the left-turning driver, who was on her way home from work, did not, police said.

The case remains under investigation, police said. No arrests have been made.
