Novato school vandalism called hate crime

NOVATO — Authorities say they are investigating hate crimes committed during two break-ins at a Marin County high school in which vandals spray-painted the student center with obscenities and offensive symbols.

Novato police would not say exactly what the vandals spray-painted Friday and again Monday night or early Tuesday at San Marin High School.

Emily Gates, a music teacher, describes the painting as racist and "disgusting."

Police say the graffiti was directed at the school administration and students.

The vandals also apparently stole flashlights, wire cutters and some props used in a production of "Chicago" by the Marin Summer Theater group.
