Boy injured in Graton hit-and-run home from hospital; driver still sought

A toddler injured last weekend when a hit-and-run driver struck his stroller returned home from the hospital late Monday, just in time for his third birthday, his mother said.

The child suffered a fractured skull Saturday night when he and his 1-year-old sister were struck in their double-stroller by the driver of a pickup, the CHP said. Doctors said the boy doesn't show signs of brain damage, said his mother, 27-year-old Amanda Lee of Santa Rosa.

"He's just getting better everyday," Lee said. "He's starting to get up and walk a bunch."

The boy's 1-year-old sister had cuts and a black eye, but was in good spirits, Lee said Wednesday. "I think she missed her brother," Lee said. "She looks like a tough little girl with her black eye."

Authorities, have been struggling to develop leads to the identity of the driver who sped toward the two children and their father. They had taken a walk on the West County Trail and were returning to their parked car on Green Valley Road near Graton around 9 p.m.

The stroller was struck and overturned with the children still strapped into it, authorities said.

The children's father, Sebastopol resident Cody Petersen, 24, jumped out of the path of the truck, authorities said. He fell over a guardrail and about 12 feet down an embankment into Atascadero Creek, suffering numerous scrapes and scratches.

All three were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, and the boy was later flown by REACH helicopter to Oakland Children's Hospital, the CHP said.

The vehicle is described as a light-colored pickup similar in size and appearance to a two-wheel-drive Toyota or Nissan truck. It has square headlights and a chrome front bumper.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the CHP at 588-1400.
