Sonoma County pot raids: 120,000 plants in 3 days

Sonoma County drug agents continued large-scale marijuana eradication efforts Wednesday, destroying 48,3000 plants found in plots in The Geysers area, Sonoma County sheriff's officials said.

The weeklong raids netted more than 120,000 plants across the county on public and private lands, Sgt. Chris Bertoli said.

Helicopters early Wednesday dropped drug agents into at least eight garden sites nestled in rugged terrain around The Geysers and on the north side of Geyser Peak, Bertoli said.

Officers found campsites and cell phones, battery chargers and a PlayStation 2 video game hooked up to solar panels, Bertoli said. They also found a loaded magazine of ammunition.

"They must have taken the gun when they ran," Bertoli said of growers that authorities suspect had been nearby.

Agents found more than 47,000 marijuana plants Tuesday in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park and Hood Mountain Regional Park. They destroyed an additional 24,721 marijuana plants found Monday in a series of clandestine gardens off Ida Clayton Road.
