Mavericks Surf Contest to be held Saturday

HALF MOON BAY - Massive waves are headed for the West Coast, making conditions ripe for the legendary Mavericks Surf Contest this weekend.

Twenty-four of the world's best big wave surfers have been summoned to California's Central Coast to compete Saturday.

The contest will take place off the coast of Half Moon Bay at a break known as Mavericks.

In previous years, the contest has been called by organizers, who decided if the conditions are right then put the surfers on 24-hour notice. The last Mavericks contest took place in January 2008.

But this year, for the first time, the contest's participants, who are scattered around the globe were given the power to vote on whether to hold the contest.
